Party Fun: Beyond Glow Stick Necklaces

For a long time – since the psychedelic-inspired dance scene and the big warehouse parties of the late eighties and early nineties – glow stick necklaces and bracelets have been a popular part of a party goer’s outfit for a big night out. Glow stick fun is found all over the world, in big clubs and at house parties – or just down the local pub. But the glow stick technology doesn’t have to remain in stick (or loop) form.

Glow sticks work with pretty complicated technology, which all contributes to producing the unique and fascinating light effects which you see on your glow stick necklaces or bracelets. Inside every glow stick, translucent plastic tubes, containing isolated chemical substances, wait for the glow stick to be snapped. These chemicals are called ‘fluorophores,’ and there are many different types, which give off a wide variety of different colours and light intensities. They also have an extreme reaction to ultraviolet light – which is what makes them so much fun to take to clubs, or other events, such as festivals, which use their own light effects. When the fluorophores combine, a chemical process called ‘chemiluminescence’ takes place, which produces the familiar friendly glow stick light – all without electricity.

Glow stick necklaces and bracelets are by far the most popular party uses of this fascinating technology. However, there are a whole load of other ultraviolet, LED or fluorophore/ chemiluminescence products which can be used to brighten up any night out.

A lot of people choose just to keep their glow sticks as wands in clubs, rather than using them as jewellery in glow stick necklaces, bracelets, anklets or rings. The practice of dancing while waving the glow sticks is so popular that it’s led to the coining of a brand new verb: ‘glowsticking.’ But You Can also use this fascinating technology on a whole host of other party accessories.

Glow in the dark bar ware has become very popular in recent years, and you can now get glow in the dark cocktail glasses, glow in the dark cocktail stirrers, glow in the dark wine glasses and glow in the dark drinking beakers.
